I really enjoyed writing this paper. This particular topic for me was very interesting and i wanted to know more information on why South Africa was legalizing prostitution for the world cup. I had no idea that other countries had done the same thing and that legalizing prostitution was more common than i thought.
This paper discusses not only legalizing in South Africa but in other countries. I also took the topic from another angle. I looked further into the pros and cons of prostitution. When you hear a controversial topic like this your gut reaction is to say no that's wrong. As i am still convinced that legalizing is wrong, some people have very good arguments as to why it should be. So, you will see both sides of the argument. It's up to you to decide what you think.

Prostitution, now a spectator sport?

The 2010 FIFA World Soccer Cup is said to bring fame, tourism, and a political boost for South Africa. The heated debate is believed by some that it is a disgrace and selling sex to make a profit it immoral. Others say that it could possibly bring an economic relief to South Africa, and help stop human trafficking of young girls and children. Both sides of the argument make valid points and are well thought out. Which is right? Is prostitution okay? Is it right to put young girls and women through human trafficking and extreme sexual abuse?

“Experts say that the only way to prevent an increase in human trafficking would be to decriminalize prostitution and promulgate anti-trafficking laws” (Bird). Jackie Selebi, Chief of Police in South Africa has been trying to convince legislation to pass a temporary allowance when it comes to prostitution, as well as drinking in public. According to human rights organizations human trafficking is assumed to get worse and could lead to more serious dangers (Bird). This is not the first time that a country has tried to legalize or decriminalize prostitution, Germany, Norway, Mexico along with others have tried and succeeded. No doubt, each time there was plenty of opposition. The underlining argument against legalization is that human trafficking would increase and prostitution would reach a very harmful state. Different organizations have worked hard to also try and convince legislation that the overall health of the city would decrease and that an outbreak of sexually transmitted diseases would occur.

Those who have encouraged the decriminalization of prostitution debate that the controversial move would lower human trafficking and the South African government could tax prostitution and could make a profit. In 2006 Germany made the exact decision to legalize prostitution for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Selebi plans to make establishments and try to keep the prostitution controlled. Those who agree with Selebi go so far to say that the laws already in place against prostitution are not working and by canceling those laws that the sex industry would not be so secretive and immoral.  Legislation has not yet made a decision to allow the temporary law to take effect, but is taking all views into consideration.
