Serena Discussion Question #14

The eagle from Serena I believe represents fear and power. “The men scattered as if dynamite had been lit, stumbling and tripping over stumps and slash as they fled” (Rash). This quote explains the fear and the power that this eagle has over Galloway’s men in chapter 10. I also think that is represents or adds to her commanding presence when around men. She took something that you would think that can’t be easily trained, and submitted it to herself. The symbolism behind the eagle I believe is that it’s a mirror image or Serena. She is not afraid of the eagle and the eagle is not afraid of her. Serena and the eagle both know that people fear them and their potential to harm others if they get in the way of what they want. “….them snakes would be clearing out like Saint Patrick himself was after them” (Rash). People know who Serena is and what she is capable of and people scatter much like what Snipes says about the snake in the book.

I believe that Rash also wanted to show that Serena does not only have power over men but also animals. Serena is the type that has to have complete control of those around her and even things around her. When the eagle drops the snake and it lands on McIntyre’s foot it makes you wonder if she is able to train the eagle to her dirty work for her, just like she gets others to do her killing for her.
